North-Touch:    Welcome to our Circle, we invite you to enjoy the sense of Touch. (Offer hand shake or hug to each participant)

Purify the Area

(As people settle into their places around the Circle the High Priest and High Priestess walk around the inside of the Circle with incense, water and salt,  greeting people, talking and cleansing the area.  People are encouraged to drum or clap and the HP HPS may wish to walk the Circle more than once)

Pagan Phrases 1995 CO1

Pagan Phrases, 1995

These are phrases you'll hear a lot in Pagan groups; what they mean, and how they should be used. It's polite to repeat any of these terms.

Blessed Be - Similar to 'aloha' this can be used as a 'hello', a 'goodbye', or a 'you are loved'. You'll hear it used often during Ritual or Circles, very much like the use of Amen.

So Mote it Be - literally translates to 'So may it be' and is often used to denote something is 'done' and now in the hands of God/Goddess.

Merry Meet - means 'We meet happily'. A welcoming gesture that can be used with friends, family and strangers alike.

May you never Thirst - you'll hear this one a lot during Cakes & Ale in Circles...and any time someone hands you a drink of any kind. It's polite to return the blessing with a slight nod of the head or by lifting the glass to honor the person giving you the drink.

May you never Hunger - the other one you'll hear often during Cakes & Ale in Circles...and any time someone hands you food of any kind. It's polite to return the blessing with a slight nod of the head or by lifting it to honor the person giving you the food.

Merry Meet, Merry Part, Merry Meet Again - refers to life, death, and reincarnation. Often used as a 'goodbye'. I see you today, I might not see you tomorrow, I look forward to seeing you again in this life or the next.

A typical Circle challenge is - 'How do you enter this Circle?' 

The response should be - 'In perfect love, and perfect trust.'

It seems quite impossible that the holiday of Candlemas should be considered the beginning of spring. Here in the Heartland, February 2 may see a blanket of snow mantling the Mother. Or, if the snows have gone, you may be sure the days are filled with drizzle, slush, and steel-grey skies—the dreariest weather of the year - in short, the perfect time for a Pagan Festival of Lights. And as for spring, although this may seem a tenuous beginning, all the little buds, flowers, and leaves will have arrived on schedule before spring runs its course to Beltane. 

“Candlemas” is the Christianized name for the holiday, of course. The older Pagan names were Imbolc and Oimelc. Imbolc means, literally, “in the belly” (of the Mother). For in the womb of Mother Earth, hidden from our mundane sight but sensed by a keener vision, there are stirrings. The seed that was planted in her womb at the solstice is quickening and the new year grows. Oimelc means “milk of ewes”, for it is also lambing season. 

The holiday is also called “Brigit’s Day”, in honor of the great Irish Goddess Brigit. At her shrine, the ancient Irish capitol of Kildare, a group of nineteen priestesses (no men allowed) kept a perpetual flame burning in her honor. She was considered a Goddess of fire, patroness of smithcraft, poetry, and healing (especially the healing touch of midwifery). This tripartite symbolism was occasionally expressed by saying that Brigit had two sisters, also named Brigit. (Incidentally, another form of the name Brigit is Bride, and it is thus she bestows her special patronage on any woman about to be married or handfasted, the woman being called “bride” in her honor.) 

The Roman Catholic Church could not very easily call the Great Goddess of Ireland a demon, so they canonized her instead. Henceforth, she would be ‘Saint’ Brigit, patron saint of smithcraft, poetry, and healing. They ‘explained’ this by telling the Irish peasants that Brigit was ‘really’ an early Christian missionary sent to the Emerald Isle, and that the miracles she performed there ‘misled’ the common people into believing that she was a Goddess. For some reason, the Irish swallowed this. (There is no limit to what the Irish imagination can convince itself of. For example, they also came to believe that Brigit was the ‘foster mother’ of Jesus, giving no thought to the implausibility of Jesus having spent his boyhood in Ireland!) 

Brigit’s holiday was chiefly marked by the kindling of sacred fires, since she symbolized the fire of birth and healing, the fire of the forge, and the fire of poetic inspiration. Bonfires were lighted on the beacon tors, and chandlers celebrated their special holiday. The Roman Church was quick to confiscate this symbolism as well, using “Candlemas” as the day to bless all the church candles that would be used for the coming liturgical year. (Catholics will be reminded that the following day, St. Blaise’s Day, is remembered for using the newly blessed candles to bless the throats of parishioners, keeping them from colds, flu, sore throats, etc.) 

The Catholic Church, never one to refrain from piling holiday upon holiday, also called it the Feast of the Purification of the Blessed Virgin Mary. (It is surprising how many of the old Pagan holidays were converted to Maryan feasts.) The symbol of the purification may seem a little obscure to modern readers, but it has to do with the old custom of “churching women”. It was believed that women were impure for six weeks after giving birth. And since Mary gave birth at the winter solstice, she wouldn’t be purified until February 2. In Pagan symbolism, this might be retranslated as when the Great Mother once again becomes the young Maiden Goddess. 

Today, this holiday is chiefly connected to weather lore. Even our American folk calendar keeps the tradition of “Groundhog Day”, a day to predict the coming weather, telling us that if the groundhog sees his shadow, there will be “six more weeks” of bad weather (i.e., until the next Old Holiday, Lady Day). This custom is ancient. An old British rhyme tells us that “if Candlemas Day be bright and clear, there’ll be two winters in the year”. Actually, all of the cross-quarter days can be used as inverse weather predictors, whereas the quarter days are used as direct weather predictors. 

Like the other High Holidays or Great Sabbats of the Witches’ year, Candlemas is sometimes celebrated on its alternate date, astrologically determined by the sun reaching fifteen degrees Aquarius, or Candlemas Old Style. Incidentally, some modern Pagan groups have recently begun calling the holiday itself ‘Brigit’, presumably as shorthand for “Brigit’s Day”. This lexical laziness is lamentable since it confuses a Deity name for the proper name of the holiday. The same disconcerting trend can be seen in the recent practice of referring to the autumnal equinox as ‘Mabon’, which is more properly the name of a Welsh God-form. 

Another holiday that gets mixed up in this is Valentine’s Day. Ozark folklorist Vance Randolph makes this quite clear by noting that the old-timers used to celebrate Groundhog Day on February 14. This same displacement is evident in Eastern Orthodox Christianity as well. Their habit of celebrating the birth of Jesus on January 7, with a similar postdated shift in the six-week period that follows it, puts the Feast of the Purification of Mary on February 14. It is amazing to think that the same confusion and lateral displacement of one of the old folk holidays can be seen from the Russian steppes to the Ozark hills, but such seems to be the case! 

Incidentally, there is speculation among linguistic scholars that the very name of “Valentine” has Pagan origins. It seems that it was customary for French peasants of the Middle Ages to pronounce a g as a v. Consequently, the original term may have been the French “galantine”, which yields the English word “gallant”. The word originally refers to a dashing young man known for his “affaires d’amour”, a true gallant. The usual associations of V(G)alantine’s Day make much more sense in this light than their vague connection to a legendary ‘St. Valentine’ can produce. Indeed, the church has always found it rather difficult to explain this nebulous saint’s connection to the secular pleasures of flirtation and courtly love. 

For modern Witches, Candlemas O.S. may then be seen as the Pagan version of Valentine’s Day, with a de-emphasis of hearts and flowers and an appropriate reemphasis of Pagan carnal frivolity. This also realigns the holiday with the ancient Roman Lupercalia, a fertility festival held at this time, in which the priests of Pan ran through the streets of Rome, whacking young women with goatskin thongs to make them fertile. The women seemed to enjoy the attention and often stripped in order to afford better targets. 

One of the nicest folk customs still practiced in many countries, and especially by Witches in the British Isles and parts of the U.S., is to place a lighted candle in each and every window of the house (or at least the windows that face the street), beginning at sundown on Candlemas Eve (February 1), allowing them to continue burning until sunrise. Make sure that such candles are well seated against tipping and guarded from nearby curtains, etc. What a cheery sight it is on this cold, bleak, and dreary night to see house after house with candlelit windows! And, of course, if you are your coven’s chandler, or if you just happen to like making candles, Candlemas Day is the day for doing it. Some covens hold candle-making parties and try to make and bless all the candles they’ll be using for the whole year on this day.

Listen to the words of the Great Mother, who of old was called Artemis, Astarte, Dione Melusine, Aphrodite, Ceridwen, Diana, Arionrhod, Brigid, and by many other names:

Whenever you need anything, once in the month and better it be when the moon is full, you shall assemble in some secret place and adore the spirit of  Me who is Queen of all the Wise.  You shall be free from slavery, and as a sign that you be free you shall be naked in your rites.  Sing, feast, dance, make music and love, all in My  presence, for Mine is the ecstasy of the spirit and Mine also is joy on earth. For My law is love unto all beings.  Mine is the secret that opens upon the door of youth, and Mine is the cup of wine of life that is the Cauldron of Ceridwen, that is the holy grail of immortality.

Wicca, A Guide For The Solitary Practitioner

I am the radiant King of the Heavens, flooding the Earth with warmth and encouraging the hidden seed of creation to burst fourth into manifestation.  I lift my shining spear to light the lives of all beings and daily pour fourth my gold upon the Earth, putting to flight the powers of darkness.

I am the master of the beasts wild and free.  I run with the swift stag and soar as a  sacred falcon against the shimmering sky.  The ancient woods and wild places emanate my powers, and the birds of the air sing of my sanctity.

I am also the last harvest, offering up grain and fruits beneath the sickle of time so that all may be nourished.  For without planting there can be no harvest; without winter, no spring.

Statement of Intent

No witch, no pagan, no human is truly an island. We all have our friends and loved ones. We all have our pack. Tonight we will be using the wolf to help us call on that energy and aid the larger community.  The sounds you’ll be hearing tonight are actual recordings of several wolves that make their home in Wolf Park in Indiana.  Wolf Park is currently home to 15 wolves that live in several different packs and groupings.  Tonight, you‘ll be seeing us acting as a pack and you’ll have the opportunity to create your own pack.  Don’t be shy, please join in if the wolf spirit moves you. 

(When finished, signal for darkness – all lights turned out)

Opening

(The pack gathers round with random playfulness, constant movement and occasional howls)

The Pack (x2):  Hear me, I am the Wolf, No chain will ever bind me.

                               Hear me, join in my song, Singing the song of Freedom.

HPS:                   Spirit soaring, song rejoicing, in the light of the moon

(When done, spotlight is turned on and CD with wolf sounds is turned on)

HP:  I am the wolf

Pack:  We let no chain bind us, We sing beneath the moon and call to the night. 

Together:  We understand our connection to each other.

HP:      I suffer

Pack:    We all suffer

HP:      I live

Pack:    We all live

HP:      My fate

Pack:  Is our fate.

(When everyone is done, HP will gather the pack and shoo them back to attention, everyone will pick up their water bowls and return to their quarter)

Cast Circle

HPS:  We will now cast the Circle

(Pack will all ‘mark’ their quarters with water.)

HP:  I cast this Circle, I mark you as mine

(HP will walk the entire circumference and join the quarters into one Circle. When done all will remain in their quarters.)

Call Quarters

(As each quarter is called they join HP as he moves to the next quarter.)

HP North:  We call to the loyal ones of hearth and family, those who dwell in the great forests.

Quarter:  I am the Black Wolf of the North, the Nurturer.  I protect the cubs and show them the way.

HP East:  We call to the free ones of mist and wind, those who dwell in the land of the midnight sun.

Quarter:  I am the White Wolf of the East.  Unlike the dog, I shall never be chained.

HP South:  We call to the brave ones of flame and fire, those who dwell in the foothills of our ancestors.

Quarter:  I am the Red Wolf of the South, the Light Bringer.  I am the warrior who returned the sun to my people.

HP West:  We call to the intuitive ones of shadow and moonlight, those who dwell along the great rivers.

Quarter:  I am the Grey Wolf of the West.  Throughout the long night, you have my call to guide you.

Invocation

(The Pack moves to the Center to call the God/Goddess)

Pack:  We call to the God, the Protector of the pack (howls), 

              We call to the Goddess, the Tender of the Mysteries (howls)

(HPS leads the group howl, three continuous howl’s to unite everyone and help them get in touch with their inner Wolf)

Hear ye the words of the Star Goddess;   She in the dust of whose feet are the hosts of heaven, and whose body encircles the universe.  Who of old was called Artemis, Astarte, Dione, Melusine, Aphrodite, Ceridwen, Diana, Arionrhod, Brigid, and by many other names.

      I who am the beauty of the green earth and white moon among the stars and the mysteries of the waters, I call upon thy soul:  Arise and come unto me.  For I am the soul of nature who gives life unto the universe.  From Me all things proceed and unto Me they must return; and before My face, beloved of Gods and of men, let thine innermost divine self be enfolded in the rapture of the infinite.  Let My worship be in the heart that rejoices; for behold - all acts of love and pleasure are My rituals.

     Whenever thou needest anything, once in the month and better it be when the moon is full, ye shall assemble in some secret place and adore the spirit of Me who is Queen of all the Wise.  Thou shalt be free from slavery, and as a sign that thee be free ye shall be naked in your rites.  Sing, feast, dance, make music and love, all in My  presence, for Mine is the ecstasy of the spirit and Mine also is joy on earth. For My law is love unto all beings.  Mine is the secret that opens upon the door of youth, and Mine is the cup of wine of life that is the Cauldron of Ceridwen, that is the holy grail of immortality.  I give the knowledge of the spirit eternal, and beyond death I give peace and freedom and reunion with those that have gone before.  Nor do I demand ought of sacrifice, for behold,  I am the Mother of all things and My love is poured upon the earth.

     And thou who thinkest to seek Me, know that thy seeking and yearning shall avail thee not, unless thou knowest the Mystery:   that if that which thou seekest thou findest not within thee, thou wilt never find it without.  For behold, I have been with thee from the beginning;   and I am that which is attained at the end of all desire.

Song of the Goddess

I am the quickening of the seed in Springtime, the glory of ripe fields in Summer, and the peace of the quiet woods as the snow calms the Earth in Winter.  I am the lilt of the maidens' melody in the morning, the patient hand of the Mother and the deep river of the mysteries taught by moonlight. 

I give the creatures of the earth the gifts of song rising from the heart, the joy of autumn sunset, the cool touch of the renewing waters, and the compelling call of the drum in the dance.  To you I give the joy of creation and the companion of beauty to light your days. 

By the powers of the steadfast Earth and the wheeling stars I charge thee; by the darkness of death and the white light of birth I charge thee; and by the terrible strength of your human spirits, I charge thee:

Strive always for the growth of your eternal soul, never intentionally diminish your strength, your compassion, your ties to the earth or your knowledge.  Challenge your mind, never accept complacently that which has been the standard merely for the reason that it is the standard by which the majority judges itself.  Thirdly, I charge thee, act always for the betterment of your brothers and sisters.  To strengthen them is to forge the true chain of humanity, and a chain is only as strong as its weakest link. 

You are my children, my brothers and sisters and my companions.  You are known in great part by the company you keep, and you are strong and wise and full of the powers of life.  It is yours to use them in my service, and I also, am known by the company I keep. 

Go forth in joy and the light of my love, turning to me without fear when the darkness threatens to overcome you, and turning also to me to share your triumphs and your achievements, and know in your heart of hearts that we are together in blood and spirit 'til the last star darkens in the sky and winter comes to the universe.

I’ve been doing both public and private Readings now for nearly 30 years. I’m an Empath and I do Empathic Readings; which means that my connection with Spirit is through your emotional energy. Private Readings are 30-45 minutes. I work as Spirit moves me, and Spirit has no time table. 

I generally do two different types of Readings...

STONE/CRYSTAL READING: these provide insight into your personality; they offer an understanding of how others may perceive you.  I use a combination of actual physical stones, gems and crystals along with a Tarot Deck of Crystal Cards that can help you with a specific question.  My Crystal Cards can suggest what the problem might be, what the blockage is that you may need to work on, and what your final result can be if you’re successful.

TAROT READING: these provide a look into the past, the present and the possible.  I use a Dragon Deck for my Tarot Readings and offer guidance only.  The choices you make in your life remain your own. When my Dragon Deck is too generic, I may also use the Crystal Cards for a more specific message.

I do ask questions during the sessions; however, I’m not asking for details.  Too many details often cloud the messages I receive.  I’m merely looking for that ‘connection’ that will assist me in giving you the best Reading possible. General, relaxed, conversation allows me to make that connection stronger and quicker.  I cannot read you if you keep your ‘walls’ up, that’s simply a waste of my time and your money. My readings provide an opportunity for your personal growth.  I don’t offer concrete answers to questions; I merely offer the suggestions that Spirit recommends.
