Goddess of movement and creativity we invite you into our circle tonight as we celebrate our spirituality. Name the Working 

 

Our ritual tonight is, for some, an exciting new adventure. For others it is a time of reflection and renewal of their spiritual path. For each of us, the God and Goddess have a special message, a truth that will bring a new spark of awareness and meaning to our individual paths. We have learned a lot about community and the power of laughter. And we would like to share a remembrance that the God and Goddess have great senses of humor, are always there to guide us and are the first to forgive when the intent is true. Tonight we will raise energy for everyone's spiritual path. Be it a beginning, a renewal, or a celebration, we invite all to share in our very special circle of growth. 

 

Perform the Work 

 

We would like everyone in circle to visualize where they want to be on your spiritual path six months from now. When I tell you to begin - visualize your path while blowing up your balloon, placing your intent inside. See your vision expand just as the balloon does with all the great possibilities that lie ahead. When you've finished blowing up your balloon, hold the end closed but do not tie it.  Hold your balloon up so we can see when everyone is done.  Now you may begin.

Raise Energy

 

Ok, everyone is done, now we're going to release the air from our balloons with as much noise as possible.  Visualize your intentions and stored up energy being released as loudly and with as much imagination and fun as you can muster.

 

(Gather the energy and release it like a Large Balloon.  Once the energy has peaked and the room begins to quiet face each other at the altar and raise arms together to signal the release of the energy)

 

Great Rite

 

I hold the chalice representing the feminine energies, the gentle, nurturing, and compassionate aspects of the Goddess.  She is the bearer of life in all forms, both plant and animal. As life and death are a never ending cycle, so are the cycles of the earth.

I hold the Athame, representing the masculine energies, the strong, powerful and protecting aspects of the God.  He is the sun, shining down and giving strength to all that grows. As all life becomes weak and dies, only to be reborn once again to continue the cycle.

TOGETHER:   We now come together to complete the union of both Feminine and Masculine energies - a union of balance and wholeness, a union in which one will compliment the other.

History

Shinto ("the way of the gods") is the indigenous faith of the Japanese people and as old as Japan itself. It remains Japan's major ‘religion’ alongside Buddhism. The earliest Japanese writings do not refer to a unified "Shinto religion", but rather to a disorganized folklore, history, and mythology. Shinto does not have a founder nor does it have sacred scriptures like the sutras or the bible. Kami are defined in English as "spirits", or  "essences", that are associated with many understood formats; in some cases being human-like, in others being animistic, and still others being associated with more abstract "natural" forces in the world such as mountains, rivers, lightning, wind, waves, trees, and rocks. Kami and people are not separate; they exist within the same world and share its interrelated complexity.

Setsubun (節分, or Bean-Throwing Festival is the day before the beginning of Spring in Japan. The name literally means "seasonal division", but usually the term refers to the Spring. Setsubun is a festival held to drive off evil spirits. Families shout “oni wa soto” (get out demons) and “fuku wa uchi” (happiness come in) when they throw the beans. The next day is Risshun, which means the first day of spring, and is thought to be the beginning of the year according to the lunar calendar. Risshun (立春) is celebrated yearly on February 3 as part of the Spring Festival. In its association with the Lunar New Year, Spring Setsubun can be and was previously thought of as a sort of New Year's Eve, and so was accompanied by a special ritual to cleanse away all the evil of the former year and drive away disease-bringing evil spirits for the year to come. Setsubun has its origins in tsuina a Chinese custom introduced to Japan in the eighth century.

Roasted soybeans (called "fortune beans" (福豆) are thrown either out the door or at a member of the family wearing an Oni (demon or ogre) mask, while the people say "Demons out! Luck in!" (鬼は外! 福は内) and slam the door. This is still common practice in households but many people will attend a shrine or temple's Spring festival where this is done. The beans are thought to symbolically purify the home by driving away the evil spirits that bring misfortune and bad health with them. Then, as part of bringing luck in, it is customary to pick up and eat the roasted soybeans, one for each year of one's life, plus one more for bringing good luck for the year to come.

Officially the most prestigious kami is Amaterasu, the Sun Goddess.  Ama means heaven and terasu is shining: she is, literally, the Heaven Shining one.  Since early times she has been championed as ancestress of the imperial line.  Traditionally, the first thing Japanese did after getting up in the Land of the Rising Sun was to give thanks to her for bestowing her life-giving light.  Some still do.  Gratitude for her daily presence is one of the key elements in Shinto.

We ask that the spirits of this place, this land, this unique and individual spot upon Mother Earth, smile upon our endeavor and grant us help and blessings.

Tonight we’ll be doing a Dragon Circle.  Dragons, and the easily visible Dragon Flies, have always been my Energy Spirits.  So tonight I’ve brought some of my buddies with me, and others from the surrounding area will probably join us. They come in all sizes, some no bigger than a Dragon Fly, others the size of a house.  If the big guy from the North shows up, don’t worry about him…he’s truly bigger than he seems and just a nice grounding teddy bear.  So don’t be surprised if you feel a slight breeze, or a warm touch.  Just say hello and let us know.

Calling

Imbolc, Candlemas, Festival of Lights, Oimelc, Brigit's Day, Groundhog's Day

Imbolc is the day the Cailleach — the hag of Gaelic tradition — gathers her firewood for the rest of the winter. Legend has it that if she intends to make the winter last a good while longer, she will make sure the weather on Imbolc is bright and sunny, so she can gather plenty of firewood. Therefore, people are generally relieved if Imbolc is a day of foul weather, as it means the Cailleach is asleep and winter is almost over.  

Today, this holiday is chiefly connected to weather lore. Even our American folk-calendar keeps the tradition of 'Groundhog's Day', a day to predict the coming weather, telling us that if the Groundhog sees his shadow, there will be 'six more weeks' of bad weather (i.e., until the next old holiday, Lady Day). This custom is ancient. An old British rhyme tells us that 'If Candlemas Day be bright and clear, there'll be two winters in the year.' 

Imbolc also just happens to be the sixth week after Yule.  In many traditions the end of the year is also the beginning…the time of year when the Gods are reborn.  In ancient times it was once a tradition to keep newborns hidden for a period of six weeks.  It was done not only for the baby’s safety, but the continuing health of the mother.  If the newborn survived the first six weeks of life it was determined that the child would be a new addition to the family.  Babies were first revealed to the community with family celebration, a baby shower or baby blessing. So it makes sense that Imbolc as a sacred Holiday would also be the time for new beginnings.  It is a time to consider new hopes for the year.  This is what we’ll be doing tonight.

Cast Circle

Three times round this Circle’s bound.  From the North and the East to the South and the West then back to the North again. 

 

The first is a Circle of Protection - as we ask Father Nature to cast a protective eye upon all who dwell within these walls.

The second is a Circle of Hope - as we understand that all who pass through these doors will find hope in themselves and in their futures.

The third is a Circle of Love - as we know that our Mother Earth shines the light of Her love upon all who gather here beneath this roof.

Three times round this Circle’s bound.  North, South, East and West from edge to edge this Circle is cast.  So Mote It Be.

Call Quarters

Dragon of the North; You who manage the land, the mountains and gemstones.  We receive and ask for your positive features of stability, decision, and grounding even as we recognize your negative attributes of stubbornness and indecision.  Enter our circle and be blessed.

Dragon of the West; You who direct the seas, the springs and lakes.  We understand and request your positive elements of emotion, intuition and healing while we recognize your negative attributes of instability, anger, and hatred.  Enter our circle and be blessed.

Dragon of the South; You who control the sunbeams and fire. We welcome and ask for your positive aspects of change, action and transformation even as we accept your negative attributes of fear, jealousy, and conflict.  Enter our circle and be blessed. 

Dragon of the East; You who command the winds and breezes.  We appreciate and request your positive attributes of intelligence, renewal, and teaching while acknowledging your negative traits of gossiping, bragging, and confusion.  Enter our circle and be blessed.

Invocation

With the utmost respect I request the assistance of the Chivani of the Roma.  Sara Kali, Mother, woman, sister, queen, the source of all Romany blood; this altar is dedicated to you.  Sara Kali, tonight I request your help – please watch over my Kumpania, protect my familia from any who would do them harm.  Let the things that happen tonight be only for the greater good of all.  

CircleOfOne, in this evening hour, place all Nature within our power.  The sun with its brightness, the moon with its whiteness, the winds with their swiftness, the sea with its deepness, the rocks with their steepness, the earth with its starkness; all things in place with Divine’s help and grace.  So Mote it be.

Aine:    Ireland; Moon Goddess and patroness of crops and cattle. Associated with the Summer Solstice.

Amaethon:    Wales; God of agriculture.

Andraste:    Britain; A war and nature Goddess. Associated with the hare And Ostara.

Anu/Dana/Dana-Ana:    Ireland; Mother Goddess, Greatest of all Goddesses. Goddess of plenty. Maiden aspect of the triple Goddess, formed with Goddesses Macha and Badb.

Bran:    Wales; The giant. God of prophecy, the arts, leaders, war, music and writing. Associated with ravens. 

Brigantia:    Britain; Goddess of pastures and rivers. Associated with Imbolc. 

Brigid:    Celtic; Warrior Goddess and Protectress and Preserver. Brigid is also a Triple Goddess. She is strong and wise. Call on her to help protect your children in a tough situation. 

Caillech Beine Bric/Scota:    Scotland; Destroyer Goddess of the Underworld. The name for Scotland comes from her( original name was Caledonia) 

Camulos:    Britian, Gaul; War God 

Ceres:    Roman; Goddess of the Harvest. 

Cernunnos:    Celtic; Horned God and consort of the Lady. God of Nature. Also called Herne The Hunter. He represents the darker aspects of nature. 

Cerridwen:    Welsh; Moon and Harvest Goddess and Goddess of nature. Goddess of the Underworld and the cauldron of inspiration. 

Demeter:    Greek; Earth Mother archetype. Excellent Goddess where birthing or small children are involved. 

Diana:    Roman; Moon Goddess and Goddess of the Hunt. Diana is many faceted. She is a seductress (as she enchanted her brother Lucifer to beget Aradia in the form of a cat) as well as a mother figure for Witches. 

Dryads:    Greek; feminine spirits of the trees. 

Eros:    Greek; God of Romance and Passionate Love. 

Flora:    Roman; Goddess of Spring and Birth. For beautiful flowers, babies, and all bounties of Earth Mother. 

Fortuna:    Roman; Goddess of Fate. 

Freys:    Scandinavian; Moon Goddess and wife/lover of Odin. Also commander of the Valkyries. 

Green Man:    God of nature, The male spirit of nature, life and growth. The Green Man 

Hathor:    Egyptian; Protectress of Women in Business. A Hathor's Mirror is very important for the Witch. Hathor was cunning as well as beautiful. 

Hecate:    Egyptian; Moon Goddess as in Crone or Dark Mother. 

Hera:    Greek; Goddess of Marriage. If handfasting or some type of commitment is the issue, Hera is the Goddess to seek. Just remember that she has a vindictive side. 

Herne The Hunter:    Britain; The dark lord. God of the hunt, wild animals, and forests. Associated with the Gods, Cernunnos and Gwynn ap Nudd. 

Hestia:    Greek; Goddess of Home and Hearth. Building a house, remodeling, or apartment hunting. Safety in the home and family unit. 

Horus:    Egyptian; Head of a Falcon and body of a man. God of the all-seeing eye and healing. 

Hymen:    Greek; God of Marriage and Commitment. His counterpart is Dionysus. 

Inanna:    Sumerian; Goddess representation of the Mother. 

Isis:    Egyptian; represents the Complete Goddess or the Triple Goddess.

Kai:    Wales; A fire and smithing God. 

Kali:    Hindu; Creative/Destructive Goddess. Protectress of abused women. Kali-Ma should be called if a woman is in fear of physical danger. Her power is truly awesome. 

Lilith:    Hebrew; Adam's first wife and said to be turned into a demoness; however, you may change your mind. In Silver RavenWolf's opinion, Lilith was a Star Woman bred with Adam. This would make her a Goddess of Higher Intelligence or a representation of the Star People. Associated with sexuality and the dark side. 

Lucifer:    Italian; Soulmate and Brother of Diana. Father of Aradia. God of the Sun and Light. 

Lugh:    Ireland, Wales; Sun and War God. Connected with the festival of Lughnasa, a harvest festival. Associated with ravens. and a white stag. 

Maat:    Egyptian; Goddess of Justice and Divine Order. Maat is the true balance of any situation. She plays no favorites and will dispense justice to all parties involved. Be sure your own slate is clean in the situation before you call her. 

Macha:    Ireland; Mother of life and death. A war Goddess. Associated with ravens and crows. Dominates males with sexual cunning and force. She was honored at Lughnasa. 

Math Mathonwy:    Wales, Britain; God of magick, sorcery and enchantment. 

Mithra:    Persian; Sun God and bringer of Light. A soldier's God. 

Morgan Le Fay:    Welsh; Death Goddess. Glamorgan in Wales is her sacred territory. 

Morgan:    Ireland, Wales, Britain; Crone aspect of the triple Goddess. Goddess of War, magick, fate and death.. She was also doubled with The Lady of the Lake. Associated with ravens, crows, shapeshifting, magick, prophecy, wisdom, war, peace and night. It is Morgan who taught Merlin his magick Patroness of priestesses and witches. 

Muses:    Greek; Goddess of Inspiration who vary in number depending upon the pantheon used. 

Nephtys:    Egyptian; Goddess of Surprises, Sisters and Midwives. 

Norns:    Celtic; the three sisters of the Wyrd. Responsible for weaving fate- past, present and future. 

Nuit:    Egyptian; Sky Mother. Often seen depicted in circular fashion cradling the stars. 

Odin:    Scandinavian; counterpart of Freya. This is the God who hung on the Tree of Yggdrasil to obtain second sight. His familiars are the Raven and the Wolf. He is depicted as a terrible God, in his old age as a God of Wisdom and psychic sight. He is the giver of Runes.
