We gather together as a Circle of friends to welcome one of our own back into the community.  In past lives we have lived, loved, and fought together.  It is with great rejoicing that we greet one who has returned.  The seed of perfection is planted in every child and awaits only recognition to give complete expression of good in this life.
 
We gather here today to witness (Mom) and (Dad) commitment to parenthood and to officially welcome a new member into our community.  We’re here because of our relationship with them, for we are their community - their circle of people.  We are the community with whom they celebrate life's special moments, and to whom they will turn in times of need.  We are their extended family and friends and we honor their commitment to this new little one, who has changed their lives forever.
 

Naming

 
Today, we welcome this precious new life as an individual.  Today, we formally “give” the child his/her name, a symbol of his/her uniqueness.  Names are powerful symbols in human cultures.  Bestowing the name is a moment of welcoming a differentiated life, with its own power, into the circle of the tribe of humanity. 
 
How shall this child be called and how did you choose this name?
 
(Name), your name was chosen with great care, and it was chosen just for you.  We all hope that you grow into a caring person who is healthy and happy, and with wisdom to help you through life.  On behalf of all who shall know you, with the hope that you find among us all the nourishment that you need, we welcome (Name) back into our community.
 

Welcoming

 
This afternoon is an opportunity for everyone to re-affirm our trust in the inherent capabilities already present in (Name) to fulfill his/her destiny.  We have the faith that he/she possesses the potential to become whatever he/she desires to be.  This occasion is also an opportunity to express our joy, as we realize that (Name) will always be in an all-embracing circle of infinite love. 
 

Parents

 
(Mom) and (Dad), to be a parent forces you to recognize that you are no longer a child.  Claiming adulthood, we look at our children and see ourselves.  We often feel the temptation to help them succeed where we have failed.  But as much as we seek to make them like us, we cannot.  What we can do is see that they do their best.  And as they grow, they will in turn be pushing us to grow with them.  This we can do, if we love them, not for who they may become, but for who they are - unique and special. 
 
Do you wholeheartedly accept the responsibilities being placed before you?
 
Parenthood is the ultimate expression and the severest test of a marriage.  The greatest act of love parents have to give their children is the love they express for one another.  The interactions between a mother and father, husband and wife, partners, form the web of the relationship that serves as the child's nest.  Children learn about men and women, communication, caring, respect, feelings, conflict, and love by watching their parents.

One of the best pieces of advice to parents I’ve ever heard comes from
Mahatma Gandhi.  It is this: “Your life is your message to your children.”
How you live it, what you value more, and what less, this is where your child will learn the most indelible lessons.  May Spirit bless you in your commitment to (Name).
 

Fairy GodMother

 
(Name), your responsibility is to (Name), and no one else.  In choosing you, the parents have honored you with a great trust.  If there are times you feel called upon to speak up, on behalf of the highest and best good of (Name), they are trusting that you will speak up.  They are trusting that, if necessary, you will be there to help him/her love, trust and respect himself/herself.  Should the need arise; it will be up to you stand in place as friend and counselor; listening when he/she needs to talk, advising when he/she asks, and always loving him/her unconditionally.  It is an honored place you hold in this child’s life.  Do you wholeheartedly accept this honor?

Be wise and sensitive enough to help him/her become good, honest, caring, giving and loving individual.
 

Community

 
This community gathered here will be especially important to (Name).  We are his people.  As he comes of age, we will appear to him/her as part of his/her world.  He/She will look among us for companionship and leadership and to all of us for support.  By watching us, he/she will learn how life works.  He/She will know the way human society works by how we create our relationships here.  Do you pledge to support this child, to respect his/her uniqueness, and to elicit the best from him/her and this family?

In this special circle, we are bound together by love and respect.  Each and every one of us matters.  When we leave here today, we will remain a part of this special circle.  As this child we name today is a newcomer, we have all at one time been newcomers.  Like all of us, he/she needs us to open our circle and support to him/her.

(Dad) and (Mom), we want you both to know that we rejoice with you in the birth of this beautiful child.  We’re here to support you, and understand that (Name) birth is a rite of passage for this family.  We lovingly support your understanding that (Name) is an individualized expression of the life force; born to walk his/her own path, live his/her own journey.
 
And if we are ever absent in a particular instance when you need our support, please call on us!  We are never so busy that we wouldn’t consider it a privilege to be asked to drop everything and lend an ear, a hand, a shoulder.  Thank you all for coming today, Blessed Be.
