Midwinter Nichols 2003

Yule
Midwinter's Eve, by Mike Nichols 2003

Our Christian friends are often quite surprised at how enthusiastically we Pagans celebrate the ‘Christmas’ season. Even though we prefer to use the word “Yule”, and our celebrations may peak a few days before the twenty-fifth, we nonetheless follow many of the traditional customs of the season: decorated trees, caroling, presents, Yule logs, and mistletoe. We might even go so far as putting up a ‘Nativity set’, though for us the three central characters are likely to be interpreted as Mother Nature, Father Time, and the baby Sun God. None of this will come as a surprise to anyone who knows the true history of the holiday, of course.

In fact, if truth be known, the holiday of Christmas has always been more Pagan than Christian, with its associations of Nordic divination, Celtic fertility rites, and Roman Mithraism. That is why John Calvin and other leaders of the Reformation abhorred it, why the Puritans refused to acknowledge it, much less celebrate it (to them, no day of the year could be more holy than the Sabbath), and why it was even made illegal in Boston! The holiday was already too closely associated with the birth of older Pagan Gods and heroes. And many of them (like Oedipus, Theseus, Hercules, Perseus, Jason, Dionysus, Apollo, Mithra, Horus, and even Arthur) possessed a narrative of birth, death, and resurrection that was uncomfortably close to that of Jesus. And to make matters worse, many of them predated the Christian Savior.

Ultimately, of course, the holiday is rooted deeply in the cycle of the year. It is the winter solstice that is being celebrated, seedtime of the year, the longest night and shortest day. It is the birthday of the new Sun King, the Son of God—by whatever name you choose to call him. On this darkest of nights, the Goddess becomes the Great Mother and once again gives birth. And it makes perfect poetic sense that on the longest night of the winter, “the dark night of our souls”, there springs the new spark of hope, the Sacred Fire, the Light of the World, the Coel Coeth.

That is why Pagans have as much right to claim this holiday as Christians. Perhaps even more so, since the Christians were rather late in laying claim to it, and tried more than once to reject it. There had been a tradition in the West that Mary bore the child Jesus on the twenty-fifth day, but no one could seem to decide on the month. Finally, in 320 C.E., the Catholic fathers in Rome decided to make it December, in an effort to co-opt the Mithraic celebration of the Romans, the Yule festival of the Saxons, and the midwinter revels of the Celts.

There was never much pretense that the date they finally chose was historically accurate. Shepherds just don’t “tend their flocks by night” in the high pastures in the dead of winter! But if one wishes to use the New Testament as historical evidence, this reference may point to sometime in the spring as the time of Jesus’ birth. This is because the lambing season occurs in the spring and that is the only time when shepherds are likely to “watch their flocks by night”—to make sure the lambing goes well. Knowing this, the Eastern half of the church continued to reject December 25, preferring a “movable date” fixed by their astrologers according to the moon.

Thus, despite its shaky start (for over three centuries, no one knew when Jesus was supposed to have been born!), December 25 finally began to catch on. By 529, it was a civic holiday, and all work or public business (except that of cooks, bakers, or any that contributed to the delight of the holiday) was prohibited by the Emperor Justinian. In 563, the Council of Braga forbade fasting on Christmas Day, and four years later the Council of Tours proclaimed the twelve days from December 25 to Epiphany as a sacred, festive season. This last point is perhaps the hardest to impress upon the modern reader, who is lucky to get a single day off work. Christmas, in the Middle Ages, was not a single day, but rather a period of twelve days, from December 25 to January 6. The Twelve Days of Christmas, in fact. It is certainly lamentable that the modern world has abandoned this approach, along with the popular Twelfth Night celebrations.

Of course, the Christian version of the holiday spread to many countries no faster than Christianity itself, which means that “Christmas” wasn’t celebrated in Ireland until the late fifth century; in England, Switzerland, and Austria until the seventh; in Germany until the eighth; and in the Slavic lands until the ninth and tenth. Not that these countries lacked their own midwinter celebrations. Long before the world had heard of Jesus, Pagans had been observing the season by bringing in the Yule log, wishing on it, and lighting it from the remains of last year’s log. Riddles were posed and answered, magic and rituals were practiced, wild boars were sacrificed and consumed along with large quantities of liquor, corn dollies were carried from house to house while caroling, fertility rites were practiced (girls standing under a sprig of mistletoe were subject to a bit more than a kiss), and divinations were cast for the coming spring. Many of these Pagan customs, in an appropriately watered-down form, have entered the mainstream of Christian celebration, though most celebrants do not realize (or do not mention it, if they do) their origins.

For modern Witches, Yule (from the Anglo-Saxon yula, meaning “wheel” of the year) is usually celebrated on the actual winter solstice, which may vary by a few days, though it usually occurs on or around December 21. It is a Lesser Sabbat or Low Holiday in the modern Pagan calendar, one of the four quarter days of the year, but a very important one. Pagan customs are still enthusiastically followed. Once, the Yule log had been the center of the celebration. It was lighted on the eve of the solstice (it should light on the first try) and must be kept burning for twelve hours, for good luck. It should be made of ash. Later, the Yule log was replaced by the Yule tree but, instead of burning it, lighted candles were placed on it. In Christianity, Protestants might claim that Martin Luther invented the custom, and Catholics might grant St. Boniface the honor, but the custom can demonstrably be traced back through the Roman Saturnalia all the way to ancient Egypt. Needless to say, such a tree should be cut down rather than purchased, and should be disposed of by burning, the proper way to dispatch any sacred object.

Along with the evergreen, the holly and the ivy and the mistletoe were important plants of the season, all symbolizing fertility and everlasting life. Mistletoe was especially venerated by the Celtic Druids, who cut it with a golden sickle on the sixth night of the moon, and believed it to be an aphrodisiac. (Magically—not medicinally! It’s highly toxic!) But aphrodisiacs must have been the smallest part of the Yuletide menu in ancient times, as contemporary reports indicate that the tables fairly creaked under the strain of every type of good food. And drink! The most popular of which was the “wassail cup”, deriving its name from the Anglo-Saxon term waes hael (be whole or hale).

Medieval Christmas folklore seems endless: that animals will all kneel down as the Holy Night arrives, that bees hum the 100th psalm on Christmas Eve, that a windy Christmas will bring good luck, that a person born on Christmas Day can see the Little People, that a cricket on the hearth brings good luck, that if one opens all the doors of the house at midnight all the evil spirits will depart, that you will have one lucky month for each Christmas pudding you sample, that the tree must be taken down by Twelfth Night or bad luck is sure to follow, that “if Christmas on a Sunday be, a windy winter we shall see”, that “hours of sun on Christmas Day, so many frosts in the month of May”, that one can use the Twelve Days of Christmas to predict the weather for each of the twelve months of the coming year, and so on.

Remembering that most Christmas customs are ultimately based upon older Pagan customs, it only remains for modern Pagans to reclaim their lost traditions. In doing so, we can share many common customs with our Christian friends, albeit with a slightly different interpretation. And, thus, we all share in the beauty of this most magical of seasons, when the Mother Goddess once again gives birth to the baby Sun God and sets the wheel in motion again. To conclude with a long-overdue paraphrase, “Goddess bless us, every one!”

Quarter Release 1996 CO1

Don't be a messy witch, clean up the Circle when done. That means thanking the Great Spirit for attending, releasing the quarters and opening the circle. Forgetting these very important steps can lead to some very uncomfortable 'cockroaches' in Sacred Space and in daily life.  Releasing the Quarters is generally done counter clockwise beginning with the last quarter called.  The release is done dependent on how they were called to the Circle or Gathering. Quarters are always Released, never Dismissed. These are merely some examples to guide and ignite the imagination.

Saining, Baby Blessing 2009 CO1

Saining, Baby Blessing
CircleofOne 2009

Baby:
Born:
Mother:
Fairy God-Mother:

May the Grace of Spirit Guard and Guide You, Now, and Forever

Greeting

Today is a very special day for all of us. It is a day in which we celebrate the birth of little (name). We gather together as a Circle of family and friends to welcome one of our own back into the community.  It is with great rejoicing that we greet one who has returned.  As all children are, (name) is our future and represents to us the light of the world. Mom & Fairy God-Mother have honored all of you today by inviting you to not only witness this beautiful welcoming ceremony, but most importantly, to participate in the blessing of this child. The seed of perfection is planted in every child and awaits only recognition to give complete expression of good in this life.

Invocation

Mother Earth, Father Sky, Divine Parent, we ask for Your Blessing here today.  Protect our family and community and surround us with Your infinite unconditional love. Keep us mindful that the miracle of incarnation is both a gift and path back to you. We ask that our sense of community be strengthened by what we are about to witness here today.

Our lives are the legacies of those who have gone before us. The ancestors of this child are no less a part of her community than we here who are present. She/he is the fulfillment of the dreams of many generations. Therefore, we welcome all of (name)’s ancestors to be with us now to participate in this protection, blessing and welcoming ceremony of little (name).

Naming

Today, we welcome this precious new life as an individual.  Today, we formally “give” the child her name, a symbol of her uniqueness.  Names are powerful symbols in human cultures.  Bestowing the name is a moment of welcoming a differentiated life, with its own power, into the Circle of the tribe of humanity.

How shall this child be called and how did you choose this name?

(name), your name was chosen with great care, and it was chosen just for you.  We all hope that you grow into a caring person who is healthy and happy, and with wisdom to help you through life.  On behalf of all who will know her, with the hope that she/he finds among us all the nourishment and encouragement she/he needs, We welcome (name) back into our community.

Welcoming

This afternoon is an opportunity to re-affirm our trust in the inherent capabilities already present in (name) to fulfill her destiny.  We have the faith that she/he possesses the potential to become whatever she/he desires to be.  This occasion is also an opportunity to express our joy, as we realize that (name) will always be in an all-embracing Circle of infinite love.

Blessing of the Child

You are connected, protected, loved, and blessed by the Divine.
Blessed be your all your senses; may they be protected, and awakened.
Blessed be your smile; may it be the light that you shine on those you meet in this lifetime
Blessed be your heart; may you feel compassion for yourself and others.
Blessed be your hands; so that you may reach out to the world around you
Blessed be your feet; so that you may connect with the earth, be grounded, and stand your ground in this world.

Know that your spirit is strong and it will guide you through this life.
Know that you have angels to watch over you and that you are never alone.
Know that you are deeply loved and that your presence brings overwhelming joy.

Parents

To be a parent forces you to recognize that you are no longer a child.  Claiming adulthood, we look at our children and see ourselves.  We feel the temptation to help them succeed where we have failed.  But as much as we seek to make them like us, we cannot.  What we can do is see that they do their best.  And as they grow, they will in turn be pushing us to grow with them. This we can do, if we love them, not for who they may become, but for who they are - unique and special.

The interactions between (name)’s closest family and friends will form the web of the relationship that serves as the child's nest.  Children learn about men and women, communication, caring, respect, feelings, conflict, and love by watching those people closest to them.

One of the best pieces of advice to parents I’ve ever heard comes from
Mahatma Gandhi.  It is this: “Your life is your message to your children.”

How you live it, what you value more, and what less, this is where your child will learn the most indelible lessons.  May Spirit bless you in your commitment to (name).

Fairy God-Mother

Your responsibility is to (name), and no one else.  In choosing you, Mom/Dad has honored you with a great trust.  They has entrusted you to hold the vision of (name)’s true nature as a perfect child of Spirit, to hold it close to your heart, and let that vision be your guide.  If there are times you feel called upon to speak up, on behalf of the highest and best good of (name), Mom/Dad is trusting that you will speak up. She/he is trusting that, if necessary, you will be there to help (name) learn to love, trust and respect herself.  Should the need arise; it will be up to you to stand in place as friend and counselor.  Listening when she/he needs to talk, advising when she/he asks, and always loving her/him unconditionally.  It is an honored place you hold in this child’s life.  Do you wholeheartedly accept this honor?

Be wise and sensitive enough to help her/him become good, honest, caring, giving and loving individual.

Community

This community gathered here will be especially important to this child.  We are her/his people.  As she/he comes of age, we will appear to her/him as part of her/his world.  She/he will look among us for companionship and leadership and to all of us for support.  By watching us, she/he will learn how life works.  She/he will know the way human society works by how we create our relationships here.

In this special Circle, we are bound together by love and respect.  Each and every one of us matters.  When we leave here today, we will remain a part of this special Circle.  In everyday behavior, it is more difficult to experience this specialness, so let this ceremony be a time when we commit to being more caring toward one another.  As this child we name today is a newcomer, we all have at one time been newcomers.  Like all of us, she/he needs us to open our Circle and support to her/him.

We rejoice with you in the birth of this beautiful child.  We’re here to support you, and understand that (name) birth is a rite of passage for this family.  We lovingly support your understanding that (name) is an individualized expression of the life force; born to walk her/his own path, live her/his own journey.

The Promise

She/he's a bundle of sweetness, brightness & fun.  The beauty of springtime, the warmth of the sun.
They're Innocence covered with mud, sand, & soot. They're Parenthood dragging a doll by the foot.
They're a composite picture of giggles & tears; of tantrums, excitement, amusement & fears. A bundle of mischief, and often a tease; a creature of moods not easy to please.
Who'll capture your heart with their pixie-like grin; or chatter and beg till your patience wears thin.
But obedient, naughty, mischievous or coy; They’re Mom's little Darling & My Pride & Joy.

Please light the first candle:    Little (name), you are the warmth of this candle. You are accepted in love and you are love itself.

Please light the second candle:    (name) let this light awaken you to truth, and help you to remember the Divine light you are.

Please light the third candle:    Let the light of these candles help you see through illusion. You are this light. Therefore, let your light shine though the darkness.
As we will it, So mote it be.

With the utmost respect I request the assistance of the Chivani of the Roma.  Sara Kali, Mother, woman, sister, queen, the source of all Romany blood; this altar is dedicated to you.  Sara Kali, tonight I request your help – please watch over my Kumpania, protect my Familia from any who would do them harm.  Let the things that happen tonight be only for the greater good of all.  So, Mote it be.

Statement Of Intent

We have gathered tonight to complete the separation of the ties that bind us to past class-mates who have chosen to explore different paths.  Now is the time to say goodbye to them and contemplate which direction you wish to see your Circle take.  After tonight’s ritual, and before re-dedication in February, decide what you would like to see kept, and what you would like to see changed. We all have certain tasks that must be done between now and then and this is the time to create and complete some of them.

Sharing Circle
(A ribbon symbolizing the ties that bind current members with past mates is produced.  A knot representing previous members of the circle is placed along the ribbon, with streamers representing existing members)

As the ribbon is passed hand to hand, everyone takes a moment to express any final feelings they have about events and people leading up to the separation.  All positive and negative emotions are expressed, allowing for cleansing and new growth.

Blessings

East, South, West and North, please aid us in this spell
Guardians of the protecting light
Be with us this day and all the night
Guide us away from harmful intent
Return ill will from where it was sent
Aid us in peace and serenity
As we will it, so mote it be

SEPARATION
(Everyone forms a circle and each person holds a streamer)

We call upon the energies of Universal Balance
We call upon the ancient energies of our people
We call upon the living essence of the Great Spirit
We call upon the mighty presence of the Great Spirit
Underworld and heaven
Land and sea

We awaken these energies unto you

Witness now that we renounce and sever
Break bonds and connection with those who have chosen a different path
By all powers that are One Power
May the great sisters of Karma now weave anew
And separate us from you
As we will it, So Mote It Be!

(The ribbon is severed between the knots, breaking all remaining spiritual ties.  The remains are placed within the fire)

Cakes And Wine

As we enjoy this food and drink, let it be a sign that what is above shall be made to manifest below.  What is within shall be without.  That we act on this plane to achieve our aims as well as placing our intentions on the astral level.  All that we do is in service and in honor to the God and Goddess.  So, Mote It Be!

Thankyou to the Goddess

With malice towards no-one, and harm to none.  If the Goddess so desires it let our Magick be done.  Thank you, Sara Kali, I am honored by your presence in my life.  I know that you walk beside me each day, guide my heart, my tongue, my spirit.  We thank you for your strength and guidance this night. In your honor, Hail and farewell

Releasing The Quarters

Guardians all, we thank you this night, you’ve lent us your powers to aid in this rite.  Four points of the circle who joined us here, we thrill in the knowledge to know you were near.  Back to the homes from whence you came, until the next time when we call you by name. Stay if you will, go if you must. Hail and Farewell

Opening The Circle

We release you, O circle of Power, from the depths of the earth to the tops of the towers. Energies emerge with tales to tell, our magick works to complete the spell. Thrice circle round, the energies fade, out to the universe upon which it was made.

May those who guide us with their light, protect us in the dark and walk beside us on the roads traveled - this Circle is open but unbroken, merry meet, merry part and may we merry meet again!

Pagan Poems 1996 CO1

Poems, 1996
Solitary Circle
I am rooted in the Earth, the Earth protects me, it empowers me.
The Earth is my Center, Air my Wisdom, Fire my Power, Water my Energy
Ground me, guide me, empower me, move me to do what must be done.

Feel
Let what I feel fill me, but not consume me;
Let me follow what I feel, but not be forced;
Let me become the kind of soul, who never clings too hard,
who lets go and yet loves;
Let me imagine better worlds, yet work in this one;
Let me touch, and treasure, even people I can never hold,
and let me learn from all my losses;
Let me out and let me in, Let me see and let me be,
a window - maybe broken - but through which a bit of air and sunlight comes.

On Children
Our children are not our children.
They are the sons and daughters of Life's longing for itself.
They come through us but not from us,
And though they are with us yet they belong not to us.
We may give them our love but not our thoughts,
For they have their own thoughts.
We may house their bodies but not their souls,
For their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow, which we can not visit, not even in our dreams.
We may strive to be like them, but seek not to make them like us.
For life goes forward not backward, nor tarries with yesterday.
We are the bows from which our children as living arrows are sent forth.
The archer sees the mark upon the path of the infinite, and He bends with us His might that His arrows may go swift and far.
Let our bending in the archer's hand be for gladness;
For even as He loves the arrow that flies, so He loves the bow that is stable.

Rite of Thanks
Golden Lord, Silver Lady
What no human ear could hear, you heard.
What no human eye could see, you saw.
What no human heart could bear, you transformed.
What no human hand could do, you did.
What no human power could change, you changed.
Goddess of love, God  of protection
You through whom all power flows;
Source of all;
Accept this humble token of thanks
From  These Solitary Witches
Who had spoken
And who have been heard.

Before time was
Before time was, there was The One; The One was all, and all was The One.
And the vast expanse known as the universe was The One,
all-wise, all-pervading, all-powerful, eternally changing.
And space moved.  The One molded energy into twin forms, equal but opposite, fashioning the Goddess and God from The One and of The One.
The Goddess and God stretched and gave thanks to The One, but darkness surrounded them.  They were alone, solitary save for The One.
So They formed energy into gasses and gasses into suns and planets and moons;  they sprinkled the universe with whirling globes and so all was given shape by the hands of the Goddess and God.
Light arose and the sky was illuminated by a billion suns.  And the Goddess and God, satisfied by their works, rejoiced and loved, and were one.
From their union sprang the seeds of all life, and of the human race, so that we might achieve incarnation upon the Earth.
The Goddess chose the Moon as Her symbol, and the God the Sun as His symbol, to remind the inhabitants of Earth of their fashioners.
All are born, live, die and are reborn beneath the Sun and Moon;  all things come to pass thereunder, and all occurs with the blessings of The One, as has been the way of existence before time was.

Dedication
You have been there for me, Since before time was.
There in the scents of the Earth, in the whisper of the Wind, in the warmth of the Sun, in the refreshing coolness of a Mountain Stream.

You were always there for me, Even before I understood.
There in the magick of Moonlight, in the wonder of a Sunrise, in the freedom of an Open Field, in the comfort of a Sheltering Forest.

Please be here for me now.  Walk beside me as I take the first steps along your path.  I accept you as you are, both the dark and the light, the good and the bad.  Two halves of a perfect whole.  Complete. So Mote It Be.

Autumn Lullaby
As a sweet tone fills the air, in this warm and alive summer atmosphere.
The green shade on the leaves is getting weak, the leaves are left in warm colors before they fall down and into eternal sleep.

Each flower hides its beautiful face, touched by the song of sleep's embrace.
The little creatures seek their nests, as the singing wind cuddles them to rest.

The warm summer-air begins to feel cold, by the chilling tune it is betrolled.
The night gets clearer, the North-star bright, as the song of sleep breaks through the light.

With the silhouette of a creature of pure elegance, She walks with song and leaves the world in a trance. They know, every valley deep and mountain high, She is the Singer of The Autumn Lullaby.

Altar Devotions
Here before the Midnight Hour, we call upon all Dragon Power
After the time of Setting Sun, we ask all Dragons to join our fun.
Dragons of Chaos, Dragons of Light Protect us in this evenings Rite.
Perform the Work Dragon of Spirit, a simple task, This request of thee I ask
No evil may be bound to me, banish all negativity, as my will so mote it be.
With Malice toward no-one, and Harm to none; If the Goddess so desires it
then let it be done!

Ancestors
You are the Vine, We are your branches
For without You, We can do nothing
From the dawn of your birth, To the sunset of your death
We honor you.

From the missions completed, To your duties left undone
We honor you.

From the seasons of your being, Through the cycle of your life
We honor you.

From you time beyond the veil, Till your earth entrance back again
May the angels support you, May Spirit surround you
May our healing love reach you, From this moment until the end of time
So Mote It Be.

Miss You Most
I miss you most upon each Samhain, When the boundary turns to sheer
I wait until the veil is parted, At the ending of the year.
Sweet spirit, as you walk amount us, At the tolling of this eve
I see your face beyond the sunset, And hear your voice upon the breeze.
In the glowing of the candle, From the shadow on the wall
I watch for you in every movement, and hear your footsteps in the hall.
Can you sit and spend the evening, As the portal open wide?
Ancestral dead, I bid you welcome,, Most recent dead, I pray , abide.
When you come I sense your presence, I put my hand out in the air
A moment, then, we stand united, Palm to palm while waiting there.
I miss you most upon each Samhain, when the boundary turns to sheer
We share these hours until the dawning, Then bid farewell until next year.

Ancestors
In Honor glow these candles bright, To those gone long before,
I ask the Goddess to shed her light, Upon us ever more.
Starlight swirls before our eyes, Twilight furls its wisdom wise
Moonlight curls within the skies, The time has come to prophesies.

Spell Quickening
Darksome night and shining moon; East then South, then West then North.
Hearken to the witch's rune; here we come to call Thee forth.
Earth and Water, Air and Fire; Wand and Pentacle and Sword.
Work Ye unto our desire, hearken Ye unto our word.
Candle, Censure, Cup and Knife; powers of the witch's blade
Waken all Ye unto life; come Ye as the charm is made
Queen of Heaven, Queen of Hell; Horned Hunter of the night.
Lend Your powers to the spell, and work Your will by magick rite.
Charge our tools with energy; By the light of moon and sun.
And as we will, So Mote It Be.  Chant the spell and be it done.
