Solstice means...standing-still-sun

Long before Christmas, people celebrated the Winter Solstice. People felt the celebrations made the Sun God happy and hurried the coming of Spring.  The Mesopotamians were thought to be the first over 4,000 years ago.  Supposedly with a 12-day festival of renewal, designed to help the god Marduk tame the monsters of chaos for one more year.   The Romans honored the Winter Solstice with a festival called Saturnalia. Servants would feast with their masters, all schools would close, no prisoners would be executed, and people would parade about the streets dressed in masks or blackface.  The Scandinavian barbarians held a festival called Jiuleis to celebrate the solstice. It is believed that the term Yule comes from this festival. The Norsemen would burn a log to repel the cold and darkness and the wood was thought to bring good luck to each household.

In Ireland a place called Newgrange was erected to celebrate the Winter Solstice. At 10 a.m. (when the sun is the brightest) the sun shines through a passageway and illuminates an engraving on the wall called the Triple Spiral, drawn to celebrate the arrival of the sun.  In Norse mythology, an arrow killed Balder, the god of the summer sun. Loki, the god of evil, made an arrow out of mistletoe and gave it to Hoder, the god of winter. It was he who killed Balder.  In Iran, there is the observance of Yalda, in which families kept vigil through the night and fires burned brightly to help the sun battle darkness.

In China, even though the calendar is based on the moon, the day of winter solstice is called Dong Zhi, "The Arrival of Winter." The cold of winter made an excellent excuse for a feast, so that's how the Chinese observed it, with Ju Dong, "doing the winter."

Spirits of Water – You were there to gift us with our first tears of life.  You will be there to accept the gift of our final tears as we say goodbye.  We honor and thank you for your offerings, Blessed Be.

New Year Recipe for Happiness...

Take twelve, fine, full-grown months and clean them thoroughly of all old bitter memories, rancor, hate and jealousy.  Clean them completely from every clinging spite; pick off all specks of pettiness and littleness.  Make them just as fresh and clean as possible.

Cut these months into thirty or thirty-one equal parts (or even 29).  They will keep for just one year.  Don't attempt to make up the whole year at one time (So many persons spoil the entire lot in this way), but prepare one day at a time, as follows:

Mix well into each day Twelve parts of faith, Eleven of patience, Ten of courage, Nine of work, (some omit this ingredient and you will spoil the flavor of the rest).  Eight of hope, Seven of fidelity, Six of liberality, Five of kindness, Four of rest (don't be tempted to leave this one out), Three of prayer, Two of meditation, and One well selected resolution.

Add to each day equal parts of hope, faithfulness, generosity, and one good deed.  Season the whole with a teaspoon of good spirits, a dash of fun, a pinch of folly, a sprinkle of play, and a heaping cupful of good humor. 

Pour all of this into a vessel of love and cook thoroughly over radiant joy.  Garnish with a few smiles, and then serve with quietness, unselfishness, and cheerfulness, and a Happy New Year is certain.

Great God, we invite You to join our Solstice Celebration.  Leave Your wintry tasks and come to play with us this festive night.  As Sage, Father, and Newborn Sun we call to You.  We rejoice as we feel the touch of Your grace, and the breath of Your dancing fire, as the days once more grow longer.  Be with us tonight, Blessed Be.

Great Goddess, we invite You to join our Solstice Celebration.  Venture out from beneath Your wintry cloak and come to play with us this festive night.  As Maiden, Mother and Crone we call to You.  Lady, fling your green scarf on the battered earth once more.  Renew our hope as we feel the touch of Your grace; warm our souls with Your embrace.  Be with us tonight, Blessed Be.

 Meditation

Close your eyes, breathe deep, in through the nose, hold it, count to three, exhale.  As the air leaves your body, allow the stress you accumulated to leave with it.  Inhale, count to three, exhale.   As the air leaves your body, allow the anger you have accumulated to leave with it.  As the anger leaves, allow your body to relax.   Inhale, count to three, exhale.  As the air leaves your body, allow the guilt you have accumulated to leave with it.  As the guilt leaves, allow your mind to relax.  Inhale, count to three, exhale.  As the air leaves your body, allow the sorrow you have accumulated to leave with it.  As the sorrow leaves, allow your spirit to relax.  Breathe deep, feel the empty places now within.  Tonight we will fill those places with love and light.  Visualize before you, a soft blue light.  It hangs before you, just off your third eye.  A gentle light, filled with the love the Goddess has for each of us.  Allow the light to pass within, to find your center.  Allow the loving light to fill your center.  Now slowly allow this loving blue light to intensify, to grow brighter within you.  As it's glow spreads, let it spread through you, pushing all the negative emotions and energy away from your center, your core.  Allow this gentle light to spread, down your stomach to your groin, up your chest to your shoulders.  Now allow this healing energy to flow down your legs to your toes, down your arms to your fingers, up your neck, embracing your crown.  Feel the light drive away the darkness, the negative, replacing it with loving, gentle energy,  allow the Goddess to cleanse away that which would harm you.  As the negative energy is pushed away from your body, out of your body, allow it to form a brittle shell about you.  A fragile shell that easily shatters, leaving nothing negative behind.  Break the shell.  Allow the pieces to fall from you, to gather on the ground.  Let Mother Earth claim the pieces, to take them away.  Do not worry, She knows how to deal with them.  Leave no trace of the shell about you.  Let Mother take care of it.  Breathe deep.  Allow the light to fill you, from your toes to the ends of your hair, filling you with love and light, KNOW that you are loved, that there are those who care about you, that the Goddess loves and cares about you.  Exhale.  All vestiges of negative energy are gone.  You are now filled with the love of the Goddess.

Breathe deep, count to three, exhale.  Allow the glow to warm you.  Now send the loving, healing energy to Mother Earth.  Allow Her to use it as She sees necessary.  Send to Her.

Breathe deep, count to three, exhale.  Now allow the light to fortify your aura, to strengthen you, to protect you from the outside influences that would drain you.  Allow the beautiful light to shine without your body, from within.  Allow the light to cover you, from top to bottom, bottom to top, in loving blue white light.  See the light, now sparkling with silver, flood your aura.  The outer shell of your aura draws strength, intensifying, becoming sharply defined.  Fill your aura with this living, loving light.  Know that this energy is an inexhaustible supply from the Goddess that at any time you may call upon it to protect you, to heal you.  Know that your own energy mixes with Deity, and together you reinforce your aura, you reinforce the psychic shell that protects you.  Be aware of yourself, blissful and alert at the center of this loving light.  Breathe deep, count to three.  Exhale.  Allow the light to fade from your consciousness, knowing at the same time that it has NOT faded from reality.  Breathe deep, count to three.  Exhale.  Release the excess energy, knowing that the Goddess will guide the energy to where it is needed most. Breathe deep, count to three.  Exhale.  Allow your body to relax, you are becoming aware of your surroundings again.

I cast this circle in the names of the Maiden, the Mother and the Crone.  We are a Circle within a Circle, with no beginning, and no ending.  We are the fire that keeps returning, the eternal flame, forever burning.  Three times round this Circle’s bound. Naught but love shall enter in, naught but love shall emerge from within.  In the names of our Lady, this Circle is sealed.

 

Quarter Calls

North:  We call upon the creatures of the North.  All you little folk who live in the Heart of the Mother, the Elves, the Trolls, the Gnomes.  We invite you now to leave the dark recesses of this garden and join in our Circle tonight.  Bestow upon us your positive powers of regeneration and growth.  Join us now in Celebration of our Lord and His Lady.

 

East:  We call upon the creatures of the East.  All you who live in the gentle breezes and howling gusts that are the breath of the Mother, the Sylphs, the Sprites, the Faeries.  We invite you now as you float past our vision on wings of air to join in our Circle tonight.  Grant us your positive powers of health and healing.  Join us now in Celebration of our Lady and Her Lord.

 

South:  We call upon the creatures of the South.  All you who live in the heat of the day and the fire of the Earth that is the soul of the Mother, the Salamanders, the Fire Drakes, the Dragons.  We invite you now to leave the sunbaked corners in this garden and join in our Circle tonight.  Bring to us your positive gifts of passion and joy of life.  Join us now in Celebration of our Lord and His Lady.

 

West:  We call upon the creatures of the East.  All you who live in the flowing rivers and rain droplets that are the lifeblood of the Mother, the nymphs, the undines, the water sprites.  We invite you now to leave the watery places in this garden and join in our Circle tonight.  Bestow upon us your positive powers of  faith and trust.  Join us now in Celebration of our Lady and Her Lord.

All stand and join hands… Relax, start with three deep breaths…in through the nose… and out through the mouth.  (long pause) Relax…release the tensions of the day.  (pause)  Tonight, although she has not yet risen, the moon is still new.  Her silver light still fills the night sky.  Reach upward, into the sky and touch that gentle light.  (pause)  Invite our Silver Lady to join us tonight…   Draw a slender ribbon of that positive energy down into yourselves, letting it settle in your heart chakra.  (pause) All around us the earth is moving into slumber…  If you listen quietly you can hear his gentle breathing.  (pause)  Reach down into the earth and touch his beating heart…  Invite our Golden Lord to join us tonight…  Once more draw a slender ribbon of that positive energy up into yourselves, letting it join with the silver light now resting in your heart Chakra.  (pause)  Watch the two lights as they intertwine with each other.  Watch them as they dance together…  Feel them expanding and filling your chest cavity.  Allow them to spill down into your left arms and into the right hand of the person next to you.  As they move, watch your light move up that person’s arm and join with their light before moving on around the circle.  See your light as it moves on from person to person. Watch your light as it continues on, twisting with the others until it becomes a strong cord moving freely around the circle.  (pause) Now push that circle of light out towards the edges of the property, to strengthen the circle already in place.  From edge to edge, above and below, this circle is now sealed.  Silver Lady, Golden Lord, join us this night.  Walk beside us, guide our hearts, celebrate your seasons with us.  With malice toward no-one, and harm to none, if our Lord and Lady so desire it, then let it be done. Entering the Circle

(From the house, step over smoking cauldron to enter the Circle)

Statement of Intent

(Welcome and Season’s Blessings)

 

Casting the Circle

(Light the luminaries clockwise:  I cast this circle hand to hand)

 

Grounding & Invoking the Goddess & God

 

All stand and join hands.  Start with three deep breaths, in through the nose and out through the mouth.  Relax, release the tensions of the day.  Tonight, although she has not yet risen, the moon is still full.  Her silver light still fills the night sky.  Reach upward, into the sky and touch that gentle light.  Invite our Silver Lady to join us tonight.   Draw a slender ribbon of that positive energy down into yourselves, letting it settle in your heart chakra.  All around us the earth is moving into slumber.  If you listen quietly you can hear his gentle breathing.  Reach down into the earth and touch his beating heart.  Invite our Golden Lord to join us tonight.  Once more draw a slender ribbon of that positive energy up into yourselves, letting it join with the silver light now resting in your heart chakras.  Watch the two lights as they intertwine with each other.  Feel them expanding and filling your chest cavities.  Allow them to spill down into your left arms and into the right hand of the person next to you.  As they move watch your light move up that person’s arm and join with their light before moving on around the circle.  Watch your light as it continues on twisting with the others until it become a strong cord moving freely around the circle.  Now push that circle of light out towards the edges of the property, to strengthen the circle already in place.  From edge to edge, above and below, this circle is now sealed.  Silver Lady, Golden Lord  join us this night.  Walk beside us, guide our hearts, celebrate your seasons with us.  With malice toward no-one, and harm to none, if our Lord and Lady so desire it, then let it be done. So Mote it Be.

EAST:   I call forth the Governor of the East, the  Archangel Raphael.  Bring with you the powers of the East, with your springtime breezes, clear the way for new beginnings and fresh starts.  Make room for the new with your winds of change.   Charge us tonight and center us in your glorious light. So Mote it Be.

 

SOUTH:   I call forth the Governor of the South, the Archangel Michael.  Carry with you the powers of the South, with your summer sunshine, burn away the endings that hold us back.  As we take back our power, shine your brilliant rays upon our goals.  Empower us tonight with the means to enrich our self worth.  So Mote it Be.

 

WEST:   I call forth the Governor of the West, the Archangel Gabriel.  Bring with you the powers of the West, with your fall rains, wash away the fears we have that prevent us from giving of ourselves.  Encourage us to hold out our hands to others.  Teach us tonight to have mercy on those who shed tears.  So Mote it Be.

 

NORTH:   I call forth the Governor of the North, the Archangel Uriel.  Carry with you the powers of the North, with you winter cold, bring a gentle death to unnecessary and harmful habits that inhibit our growth, open our lives to new paths.  Show us tonight how to keep our feet planted firmly in the earth as we continue to reach for the stars.  So Mote it Be.

East:  On the Wheel of the Year, Springtime is in the East.  It is the time of the Maiden, of fresh birth and new beginnings.  What went before, will be forgotten, replaced with new experiences, new challenges, uncharted paths.  Tonight, when you come into the East we will ... South:   And the Wheel of the Year turns to Summer.  Now in the South it is the time of the Mother, the Warrior.  It is a time of strength and power, when all things are possible.  Tonight when you come into the South we will ... West:   Once more the Wheel of the Year turns.  Fall, or Autumn, is in the West and it is the time of the Crone.  The thread of life has been measured and is now waiting to be cut.  Now is a time of confidence and understanding, there is still much life to be lived,  but time can now be spent on giving and teaching.   Tonight, when you come into the West we will ... North:   The Wheel of the Year finally turns to Winter.  In the North, it is a time that has no time.  This is the place between Death and Life.  It is a time when all that went before is reviewed and remembered.  All is quiet, waiting, there is an air of expectation.  Tonight when you come into the North, take a moment to remember this past year, perhaps whisper a word of thanks.  Then take a stone from the basket on the altar and remember, that ‘life is like a box of chocolates’, you never now what you’ve gotten until you take that first bite!
